Always Late…but Never Too Late…

Always Late…but Never Too Late…

I was recently shaken by the story of a Parent whose years of small, suboptimal decisions and weeks of big, reckless decisions had painted the Parent into a cramped, dark, expensive and helpless corner. I won’t get into details, but the details hardly matter because the experience and the story is so typical.

A Co-Parenting relationship, in the best of circumstances, starts off as a benign mole on your shoulder. It’s nothing to worry about but worth getting checked out at the first sign of irregularity.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of Co-Parents are much more cautious about that mole than they are their Co-Parenting Relationship and, by extension, their ability to see, communicate with and raise their children. If I were to compare the point at which these Co-Parents come see a Child Custody lawyer to the point at which someone first saw a doctor about an infected, malignant, painful and cancerous mole…suffice it to say it would be gross.

Why not get a check up?

There are certain communities that are at greater risk for certain conditions. And, those communities are at greater risks at certain points in their lives. At a certain age, women begin to see their OB/GYNs and get mammograms. Men get their prostate checked.

Even absent any symptoms whatsoever, the failure to even get checked or screened for these conditions is obviously reckless.

Yet, Co-Parents come and go, move in and move out, raise and rear their children for years without even merely consulting a Child Custody lawyer.

We, the individual Child Custody lawyers and support staff at Foxtrot, have “jobs” at our firm. But working together, our team at Foxtrot Family has a Mission. Part of that mission is to highlight the misconceptions and, more importantly, the non-conceptions regarding Child Custody.

You don’t know what you don’t know. You can’t even fathom the worst-case scenario but we see it sitting across the conference room table from us on a regular basis.

It’s Never Too Late

If we go back to our skin cancer analogy, you might feel some regret that you let an ominous condition progress further than it should, but it’s NO reason to ignore it now and let nature take its course without any professional intervention whatsoever.

When we say that we help Committed Parents and Caring Relatives be effective in Child Custody cases, we use the word “effective” for a reason. In the best or worst of circumstances, you can always be more effective…more intentional…more decisive. Tiger Woods has a golf coach. Your six-year-old nephew has a T-Ball coach. There’s always more to learn; there’s always accountability that can help us get back to and stay on the right course.

If you’ve read this far, it’s time for a check up. It’s time to see the doctor. It’s going to get worse before it gets better, but you have the chance to be armed and prepared. Whether it’s with our team of lawyers and staff who do only do Child Custody all day every day, or another of our capable, competent colleagues, we hope and pray you get to know what you don’t know and move forward with confidence and hope for a better future for your children, for your family and for you.
