Child Custody Devotional – Genesis 29:7 – Save the Daylight!!!
Then Jacob said, “Look, it is still broad daylight. It’s not time for the animals to be gathered. Water the flock, then go out and let them graze.” Genesis 29:7
Scientifically, there is a “dark” side to Daylight Savings Time…
Individuals with young children in the household experience a statistically significant and short-term detriment to their life satisfaction. (Kuehnle, D. and Christoph W. Using the life satisfaction approach to value daylight savings time transitions: Evidence from Britain and Germany. Econstor 2014).
When we “Spring Forward” and lose just 1 hour of sleep, the effects can last up to 5 days! ( Monk TH, Folkard S. Adjusting to the changes to and from daylight saving time. Science 1976; 261:688-9.)
The loss of just 1 hour of sleep can increase the risk of traffic accidents. (Coren, S. Daylight Savings Time and Traffic Accidents. New England Journal of Medicine 1996)
So be patient with the kids and with yourself as we all adjust. But, hey, we’ve been cooped up and cold, at least by Alabama standards. By the time we’ve gotten off work, picked up the kids from after-school daycare and gotten home it’s already dark about the only thing we can do to keep the troops occupied is to throw a screen in front of them…
So today we choose to be thankful for Daylight Savings Time! To the kids who are growing up and the kids who have grown up, in age and stature at least, get outside and get dirty. Give the kids a chance to scrape their knees and if they do so while they’re with the Other Side then avoid the temptation to freak out. Just have a laugh, shrug it off and grab the Neosporin®.
