Child Custody Devotional – What do you create by giving something up?

Whatever our beliefs or principles, the liturgical calendar provides myriad opportunities to reflect and consider what we do and who we are in the broader sense, to take a step back from constantly being in survival mode and reacting to the latest event, circumstance or inclination. More practically, though, and especially during Lent, it gives spiritual and intellectual weight to even the smallest decisions. What other time of year does not eating cupcakes or having that glass of wine mean more than just being a glutton for punishment, right?

For parents and relatives in #ChildCustody and #CoParenting cases, though, it can be difficult to give something up. It might be an illness like addiction or trauma. It can be anger, pain or resentment towards the Other Side. The key, though, is to focus on what you’re creating, not what you’re giving up. Create gratitude rather than give up feeling like a victim. Create a healthy snacking habit rather than stopping by Edgar’s Bakery on the way home.

Human beings find it difficult to just stop doing something; we aren’t wired for empty space. But, we are endowed with the ability, hunger and motivation to create. Thus, we’ll have a lot more success if we focus on what we’re doing rather than what we’re not doing, what we’re creating in our life rather than avoiding.
