Child Custody Devotional – What We Don’t Do

Christians call them devotionals. Marcus Aurelius called them mediations. A successful podcast, Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, adopted lectio divina and applied it to the work of J.K. Rowling. The point is that wisdom can come from anywhere, and as a DEI employer, our team at Foxtrot benefits from different perspectives, plenty of which hits on the same timeless principles, whether it’s from the Bible, Bhagavad Gita or the guy that created the laptop I’m typing this on. The idea is to get still, get curious and consider a small, palatable amount of text but do so deeply and consider how it might help you live well and serve others.

Here, I think Mr. Jobs hits on a principle as timeless as when Sun Tzu said “[h]e will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight.,” or, essentially, pick your battles. When people talk about their “calling,” they’re not talking about 87 different things; they’re talking about their single or at most very few greatest opportunities to serve, focusing and utilizing their finite time, energy and resources to do so. Think about a company like Apple, which Steve Jobs led on two separate occasions, which at times has been by some measures the largest company in the world. Think about all the myriad things they could do but don’t. Consider the few things they do and how well they do them.

What have you volunteered for or taken on, or so often in #ChildCustody and #CoParenting, simply failed to ignore, that has either worn you down or taken time and energy away from the few things you know you want to be focusing on?

I work at Foxtrot Family Law, where we help Parents and Relatives stand up for themselves in Child Custody cases. I’m a husband, a father and a Child Custody lawyer. As for me and my house, Apple makes the computers and Mr. Rooter fixes the toilets.
