In Child Custody, “So What” Gets a Bad Rap
We heard @tferriss on a podcast drop a great tip that could really come in hand in #ChildCustody and #CoParenting. Every time you’re triggered by the Other Side, ask yourself, “So What?”, three times and consider how something actually affects you or your kids. It sounds kinda smart-alecky, but applied literally, it can really help us work through the day-to-day challenges we face in Child Custody.
~
For example, “the Other Side said [something nasty].” So what? “So I’m mad about it and they can’t treat me that way.” So what? “So I want to somehow stop them from doing that.” So what?… and here’s the kicker … “so I’ll either file a contempt charge or harassment charge and show them they can’t mess with me” OR “that may not be the best use of my lawyer’s time and my financial resources so I’ll just ignore and go on about my day.”
~
The point is NOT what you decide to do. The point is to get to clarity or to a decision or to a plan and to a next step. Asking “So What” helps lead to resolution. The initial trigger just identifies the problem without doing anything about it and we either end up dwelling on it or feeling helpless.
